Esports Hydration

Healthy habits start here.

Esports Hydration

Did you know that esports athletes can lose weight and burn calories at the level of professional athletes during a competitive tournament? Gamers Burn 400 calories in 2 hours. That's as many calories in a 2 Hour Session as 1,000 Sit-Ups.

At Maysun, we are very passionate about Hydration and Nutrition, because what you take in becomes what you can give out. What you consume shapes who you become: mentally, physically and emotionally.

We help Players build daily routines that support long-term health, sharper focus, and sustainable performance. One of the simplest and most powerful habits you can learn is paying attention to what fuels your brain and body.

Processed foods and sugary drinks increase inflammation and drain mental endurance. A nutrient-dense, whole-food approach gives you the clarity, stability, and energy you need to perform at your best.

Hydration in Gaming

Hydration drives performance, recovery, and health. Gaming places unique physiological and cognitive demands on players, which is why standard hydration guidelines don't always translate. Our scientific team studied these realities in real-world settings and developed practical, evidence-based recommendations to help gamers support both health and performance.

Minimal Sweat. Maximum Neural Output. Our research shows that esports athletes lose very little fluid during play. Competition takes place in cool, controlled environments where sweat loss is minimal and salt loss is negligible. As a result, hydration in esports is not about replacing electrolytes lost through sweating, but about supporting the brain, which drives every performance decision. Esports is a mind sport, not a sweat sport.

Why water alone isn't enough

On the one hand, gamers often under-hydrate consciously. Toilet breaks disrupt momentum, so many limit fluid intake, similar to some endurance athletes like cyclists and marathon runners. On the other hand, long gaming sessions combined with intense focus and stress can reduce normal thirst perception. The brain temporarily deprioritises hydration signals (described as stress-related hypodipsia), meaning players may not feel thirsty until performance has already declined. This effect is functional, temporary, and context-driven, rather than a medical condition.

This is why smart hydration is critical. Not just drinking more, but hydrating in a way that supports the brain and nervous system both short term and over time. Formulations built around natural, bioactive, nutrient-rich ingredients help players go longer, maintain high performance, and recover without relying on crude or short-lived stimulation. It should be simple: give gamers what they need so they don't have to think about it and can stay focused on the game.

Water is essential and today the best choice there is, but only water is not sufficient for high-performance gaming. Esports hydration must go further.

Gaming Energy & Sports Drinks Have Formulation Gaps

Sugar: In physical sports, carbohydrates fuel muscle performance. In Gaming and in general, they mainly trigger blood sugar spikes, jittery focus, crashes 60-90 minutes later and unstable decision making.

Zero sugar: No sugar is not automatically the better choice either. Most zero-sugar drinks rely on artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame-K, or saccharin, which can confuse the body's normal glucose signalling. Sweet taste without energy delivery may trigger cravings, alter insulin and appetite responses, and increase the drive to seek carbohydrates later.

Some studies also suggest effects on gut-brain signalling and reward pathways, which can undermine satiety and self-regulation over time. There is growing scientific and consumer scepticism toward zero-sugar formulations, especially for sustained cognitive performance, where stable energy signals matter more than extreme sweetness without fuel.

“

For cognitive performance, a small amount of real sugar is often more supportive than artificial sweeteners, which can disrupt normal energy signalling. The brain prefers honest fuel over sweet promises without energy

says Maysun's Performance Nutrition Scientist Charles Palmen.

Functional Ingredients: Most energy drinks, isotonic sports drinks, and gaming powders are designed for general energy or physical activity. As a result, they often rely on synthetic stimulants like Taurine, Caffeine and standard vitamin blends mainly B-vitamins, while key micronutrients such as vitamins C and D, and minerals that support the nervous system and cognitive regulation like magnesium or zinc, are often missing or included in minimal amounts.

Dosage: Another common misunderstanding in gaming hydration and energy products is the use of extremely high nutrient doses, often advertised as 300%, 500%, or even 1000% of NRV for certain vitamins like B6 and B12. These numbers look impressive, but they are largely marketing-driven rather than performance-driven.

The body has limited absorption and utilisation capacity for many micronutrients. Once that threshold is reached, excess amounts are filtered by the kidneys and excreted in urine, offering no additional benefit for focus, energy, or performance. This elimination process can slightly increase urine output and the need for toilet breaks. Excessive intake of certain vitamins, such as Vitamin B6, can even carry health risks at very high doses, including peripheral neuropathy.

Excessive intake of Vitamin B3 (niacin), especially at high supplemental doses, has been associated with flushing, gastrointestinal discomfort, and liver stress. These examples highlight why excessive dosing can carry potential health risks rather than performance benefits. More is not better. Effective formulations focus on the right amounts, delivered in forms the body can actually use, rather than exaggerated percentages designed to catch attention.

Vitamins & Minerals: Many dietary supplements and powders rely on precursor vitamin forms that require conversion in the body, which is not always optimal for absorption or utilisation. A common example is vitamin B12, where cyanocobalamin must be converted into active forms such as methylcobalamin before it can be used effectively.

Most supplement brands also use conventional magnesium forms designed for general health and relaxation. While these support systemic magnesium levels, magnesium L-Threonate is the form best shown to cross the blood-brain barrier and increase brain magnesium levels, which is relevant for cognitive function.

Many consumers are still unaware of these differences, so purchasing decisions are often driven by shelf visibility or social media exposure rather than formulation quality. Whole foods, in contrast, provide vitamins in naturally bioavailable forms and within supportive nutrient matrices.

A strong foundation should always be built through balanced, consistent nutrition. On top of that foundation, drinks and supplements become a strategic tool when they are chosen for ingredient quality, bioavailability, and purpose. Used intentionally, they can support focus, recovery, and performance over time, rather than acting as short term fixes.

The Neurofuel System For Performance

The limits of gaming performance are neurological, not muscular. Most brands peak in energy boost, but underperform in neuro and cognitive KPIs like reaction, visual clarity, decision accuracy, emotional stability and mental endurance. A modern Player has a plan. To stay ahead of the game your body needs strong functional ingredients.

At Maysun, we don't assume what players need. We work with nutrition and medical testing to identify individual nutrient gaps, from key vitamins and minerals linked to cognitive load and recovery. Based on these insights, we help players build a targeted nutrition plan designed to close deficiencies and support brain performance, resilience under pressure, and long-term health customized for the digital world, rather than relying on generic, one-size-fits-all formulations.

Here is a checklist with the essential nutrient sub-categories that support the right fuel system in Gaming

Neural energy:Small amounts of real carbohydrates to support focus, reaction time, and decision-making. Ideal dose 3-6g per 100ml
Amino Acids:To support neurotransmitters that drive motivation, attention, and mental endurance, in particular L-Theanine paired with caffeine to reduce jitters
Minerals:Such as magnesium and zinc, for nerve signalling, recovery, and stability under pressure
Vitamins:To support brain, metabolic, and visual function. B-vitamins alone aren't enough, and indoor lifestyles often mean low vitamin D
Omega-3s:For brain and retinal cell structure and efficient signal transmission
Antioxidants:To protect the visual system and manage oxidative stress from long screen time such as Vit C, Lutein
Adaptogens & Botanicals:To help regulate stress and improve resilience during competition like Ginseng
Nootropics:To support focus, processing speed, and mental precision, for example Citicoline
